Modification Strategy 2: Ask Students to Create or Connect Different Representations (Connect)

We know that mathematics can only be communicated through representations and that representations are necessary to explore and solve problems (Moore, Morrow-Leong, & Gojak, 2020). The ways we represent our ideas about mathematics can be classified into five categories, depicted in Figure 4.10. As teachers, we should avoid explicit instruction of a particular representation and instead position students to acquire and make sense of a representation.
